Ever dropped something precious down the sink drain? It’s a gut-wrenching experience, right? Perhaps that’s the reason you stumbled across this particular blog today! Well, you’re in luck! We get how important it is to retrieve that ring or trinket, so we’re here to help. This guide will show you how to navigate the retrieval process and get yourself out of that sink-drain drama you’ve found yourself in. Whether you’re in the middle of this plumbing predicament or just want to be prepared for the future, keep reading for the steps from your friendly Five Star Cincinnati Plumbing family!

STEP 1: THE FAUCET

First and foremost, if you accidentally drop something down your sink drain, make sure to turn off the sink faucet right away and keep it off until you resolve the problem and retrieve the item. You definitely don’t want to risk pushing it further down the drain and into the mainline. Usually, small items (like rings) will get stuck in the P-trap and stay there unless you retrieve them.

STEP 2: THE DRAIN STOPPER

Chances are, by now, you’ve probably already removed the drain stopper (if your sink has one) to take a look down the drain. However, if you haven’t done it yet, just gently remove it so you can get to the drain faster. If the drain stopper doesn’t come out easily, no worries! Just take a peek under the sink and unscrew the pivot rod arm connected to the sink’s drainpipe. You might need a wrench or pliers to twist it off. If it’s a bit dark down there, grab a flashlight or use your phone in selfie mode for a better view. Once you’ve loosened that part, go back to the drain stopper in the sink and see if it comes out. If it does, you’re good to go to step three!

STEP 3: THE GRABBING TOOL

Have you ever come across a grabber claw? If you are not familiar with what this is, it is a handy tool that can greatly simplify the entire experience. Designed with four prongs, it easily fits into tight spaces like sink drains, enabling you to remove and retrieve blockages. In our case, it has the potential to assist in the recovery of your lost item. You should be able to find one conveniently at any home improvement store. With a little patience and the aid of a grabber claw, you may successfully resolve your sink drain issue and retrieve your ring/item.

OR

ALTERNATE STEP 3: THE MAGNETIC TOOL

Depending on the nature of the item that was accidentally dropped down the sink, you may consider utilizing a telescoping magnetic wand. This practical tool can effectively retrieve the item directly from the sink drain due to its magnetic properties and extendable design. It is important to note, however, that this specific tool is unable to pick up silver and gold rings or jewelry since silver and gold are non-magnetic materials.

OR

ALTERNATE STEP 3: THE SHOP VAC

Alright, it’s time to get a little creative. Do you have a shop vac lying around? If you do, this next method might just be perfect for you! Grab your trusty shop vac and slide a nylon stocking over the nozzle. Now, hold on tight to the nozzle, position it directly over the sink drain, and switch on the shop vac. With a bit of luck, your ring (or whatever you dropped) will get sucked up and caught by the nylon net, making it easy for you to retrieve.

OR

ALTERNATE STEP 3: THE P-TRAP

And now, let’s talk about the P-trap method. You know that curve in your drainpipe that looks like the letter P? It’s shaped like that to hold pockets of water, which keeps those nasty sewer gases from stinking up your home. Plus, it also catches any random stuff that might find its way down the drain. Kind of like the situation we’re in right now. (Go figure!)

Located under the sink, the P-trap is usually made out of metal or PVC. Before you start, it’s a good idea to place a bucket or container right under the P-trap. It’ll catch any water, gunk, and maybe even your lost item. To remove the P-trap, just loosen the two nuts above and below it. Once the nuts are loose, the P-trap should come off, and you can dump its contents into the bucket. Now, you should have your ring or item back in your hands! Congrats!

After all is said and done, make sure to put everything back where it belongs. That includes the drain stopper, pivot rod arm, and the P-trap. Precision and patience are key when it comes to retrieving a ring! Hopefully, this blog has helped you turn a potentially disastrous situation into a successful rescue mission. If not, no worries!
